History of the College:

Established in 2008, Government Degree College (GDC), Eluru, was founded with a mission to democratize quality higher education for students in the heart of West Godavari. Originally affiliated with the historic Andhra University in Visakhapatnam, the institution later transitioned its academic oversight to Adikavi Nannaya University (AKNU), Rajamahendravaram, following the university's establishment. In its early years, the college provided a foundational curriculum comprising B.A. (HEP), B.Com (Gen), and B.Sc (MPC and CBZ) primarily in Telugu medium. However, reflecting the shifting demands of the global job market, the college underwent a significant pedagogical modernization: it introduced B.Com in Computer Applications in 2020-21 and transitioned all courses to English medium by the 2021-22 academic year.

In a landmark move toward academic flexibility, GDC Eluru adopted the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, implementing the four-year Honors system across the state. This led to the introduction of a sophisticated Major and Minor framework starting in 2023-24, pairing History with Economics, Commerce with Computer Applications, and specialized sciences like Mathematics with Chemistry and Zoology with Botany. The curriculum has continued to expand rapidly, adding B.Sc Computers and Political Science as Majors in the subsequent 2024-25 and 2025-26 academic cycles to ensure a diverse range of disciplines for its growing student body.

Currently, the college maintains its academic operations within the shared premises of the Government Junior College and Government High School at Kotadibba, located strategically in front of the Central Jail, Eluru. While the institution presently utilizes these existing classrooms and facilities, it is poised for a transformative physical expansion. The college has secured an advanced position for 3.35 acres within the Kotadibba campus to facilitate the construction of its own dedicated building. Driven by a collaborative spirit, the administration is actively working alongside the State Government and local philanthropists to develop a permanent, state-of-the-art infrastructure that reflects its status as a vital hub for higher learning in Andhra Pradesh.
